Earrings are the only piece of jewellery a maker is asked to make twice, in agreement with itself. Two stones, two pieces of metal, two hand-fabricated posts — answering to each other, in the same light, from twenty centimetres away.
The matching is the work. Stones in pairs are rarer than stones alone — every commercial parcel passes through three or four hands before two pears agree on body and clarity. We accept that the matching may take months; we will not accept a near-miss.
Once matched, the setting is fabricated to the stones, not cast. The bail accent is set as a single bead, so the drop hangs without a visible solder line at the post.
Months of looking. Cutters in Jaipur, Idar-Oberstein and Geneva see the brief.
Hand-fabricated platinum or gold posts, made to the stones. Not cast.
Weight matched to within 0.05g per side, so the drop hangs square on the ear.
